POSITION TITLE: Web Developer
REPORTS TO: Agency Director
UPDATED: August, 2026
Sage Marketing Group is a growing boutique agency.
We’re seeking a Web Developer to help us build, launch and troubleshoot websites.
Ideal candidates have fast-paced agency experience, deeply understanding how work moves from strategy to execution.
You must have strong command of the technical chops required for coding sites (mainly Wordpress, Elementor, Shopify), have good agency instincts, clear communication and the ability to bring efficiency to a high-volume workflow.
If you like working on one client or project, please don't apply, but if in the era of vibe-coding, you want to work somewhere that still believes in real people writing real code, keep reading!
POSITION PURPOSE
You are the technical backbone of our Production & Dev team.
You take approved designs from our creative team and turn them into fast, clean, responsive websites, then keep those sites healthy long after launch.
This role owns the technical side of the house: builds, hosting, DNS, integrations, launches, and the standards that keep client sites stable and secure.
Design direction comes from our Art Director.
Client communication runs through our account team.
What's yours is the build, and when a site ships with your name on it, it works.
YOU’RE RIGHT FOR THE JOB IF YOU ARE/HAVE:
A developer first.
You'd rather write clean code from a solid design file than push pixels around a mockup.Proven experience in an agency or multi-client environment, comfortable jumping between projects and codebases daily.Deep fluency in WordPress (including Elementor) and Shopify, from custom themes and plugins to the quirks of each platform.Disciplined about documentation.
Credentials, hosting notes, and build decisions get written down, not stored in your head.A straight shooter with non-developers.
You can tell a PM what's realistic, what it'll take, and where the risk is.Someone who owns outcomes.
When a launch is yours, it goes out on time and nothing breaks.Honest problem-solving instincts.
You'd rather flag a bad approach on Tuesday than patch it on Friday.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Build: Lead end-to-end development of WordPress and Shopify sites, including custom themes, plugins, and advanced functionality.
Write clean, efficient HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP.
Translate: Partner with our Art Director and design team to turn approved mockups into responsive, pixel-accurate builds.
Creative owns the direction; you own making it real.Own the Stack: Manage hosting environments (SiteGround, WPEngine, Flywheel), DNS, server settings, backups, and security.
You are the agency's technical authority and you keep the infrastructure documented and accessible.Own the Craft and Results: Self-review builds across devices, browsers, and interactive states before it goes to review.
You nail the basics and own the results before internal reviews.Launch: Oversee site launches with minimal downtime and zero SEO surprises, then handle maintenance, updates, and support after.Integrate: Connect third-party tools and platforms including Google Analytics, CRMs (GoHighLevel, Salesforce, Hubspot, Ontraport), email systems (MailChimp, MailGun, LeadConnector), and payment gateways.
Build custom solutions with REST and GraphQL APIs when off-the-shelf won't cut it.Optimize: Keep sites fast, accessible, cross-browser compatible, and aligned with technical SEO best practices.Estimate: Scope development hours honestly with PMs so we quote right and deliver on what we promise.Document: Maintain current documentation on hosting, DNS, credentials, and builds so nothing about our clients' sites lives with only one person.
MUST-HAVE SKILLS:
3-5+ years of professional web development experience, agency or multi-client environment preferred.Proven expertise building and maintaining WordPress and Shopify sites.Attention to detail: the details make the design.
The last 5% is often the most crucial.Strong proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP, with working knowledge of SASS/LESS, jQuery, or React.Experience with database administration (MySQL/PostgreSQL).Solid command of hosting, caching, DNS, and server environments.Ecommerce build experience: payment gateways, shipping rules, tax configuration.Experience with content migrations, CMS setup, and site architecture.Strong troubleshooting skills and calm under a deadline.Clear communication with designers, PMs, and non-technical teammates.Comfortable managing your work in project management software (we use Basecamp) and tracking your time.
EXTRA CREDIT SKILLS:
GoHighLevel experience, especially custom code, funnels, or automations.
We run a white-labeled GHL platform and the developer who knows their way around it starts ahead.Experience using AI dev tools as an accelerant.
We like developers who use/are comfortable with AI tools to move faster and still know exactly what every line does; and to fix/troubleshoot vibe-coded items that clients bring us.
SMTP, mail deliverability, and related systems.LMS platforms such as LearnDash, Thinkific, or Kajabi.Technical SEO depth, including Core Web Vitals and structured data.Familiarity with AI-search visibility concepts.Experience building processes, templates, or systems that make dev work more repeatable.
BASIC WORKPLACE STUFF:
Be a team player.
No jerks allowed.Enjoy your work.
You will spend a good portion of your day on this stuff, we want you to be happy doing it!Support account, design, and digital teams effectively.Work effectively with team members as well as autonomously.
We don't micromanage, so you need to work well without us looking over your shoulder.Complete projects as necessary and/or as assigned efficiently to meet deadlines.Be a good SageMG-er.
Adhere to our policies and keep your behaviors and actions consistent with Sage Marketing Group's values and standards.Continuously look for ways you can improve or help the team improve, so we can better service our clients.Be organized, perceptive, and insightful.
