Senior Software Engineer

Location: London (hybrid, ~1 day/week in office, otherwise remote) Salary: £65,000–£85,000 depending on experience, plus share options About My Emissions Food and drink accounts for a quarter of the UK's greenhouse gas emissions. Food businesses increasingly need to measure these emissions, but traditional solutions are often and slow, manual and expensive. My Emissions uses technology to solve this problem. Using the latest AI technologies, we’re able to automate the most repetitive and time-consuming tasks, turning a 6 month project into a 5 minute task. The results are often more accurate as well. Ultimately, this allows customers to move from just reporting carbon to taking actions. We now work with 100+ food and hospitality businesses across the UK and abroad, with customers including 25+ UK Universities, recognised brands like GAIL’s and Wahaca, and even UEFA, who we’ve worked with at the Champions League Final for 3 years! You’ll be joining a lean 8 person team that’s using AI and other technologies to solve real-world problems for our clients. The Role We're hiring a backend engineer to take primary ownership of our platform backend. You'll work alongside our Head of Software, a frontend engineer, and our data lead to build the systems that power our platform. This is a high-ownership role in a small but mighty product team. You'll have real influence over what we build and how we build it. It suits someone who wants broad scope and responsibility, and while we want someone who can confidently own the backend, we welcome people interested in working across the stack and leading projects from inception to delivery. What You'll DoTake primary ownership of the core application backend (Django) and auxiliary services (FastAPI).Evolve our AI-powered data ingestion and emissions calculation pipelines, with a focus on accuracy and reliability.Help build robust, scalable infrastructure capable of processing high volumes of data quickly and reliably.Collaborate with the rest of the product team to develop innovative solutions that help businesses understand and reduce their emissions.Drive the adoption of the latest AI tech across our development workflows, our product, and the wider business. What We're Looking ForStrong backend experience in Python, ideally with Django and/or FastAPI.Comfortable architecting systems that handle large tasks reliably and performantly, across API design, async processing, relational database design and querying, error handling, and monitoring.Confident designing and deploying cloud infrastructure with AWS.Happy taking features from idea to production, with a pragmatic, self-directed, and collaborative approach. Nice to HaveExperience building with AI/ML or integrating LLMs into production systems.Familiarity with data pipelines or working with sizeable datasets.Some frontend comfort (we value people who can reach across the stack).Interest in climate, sustainability, or food systems.
