Position Summary The Software Engineer II is a mid-level engineering role responsible for designing, developing, testing, and maintaining scalable software solutions with limited guidance. This role owns features and components end-to-end and collaborates with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality payment applications, services, and systems. The Software Engineer II contributes across all phases of the software development lifecycle—from requirements analysis through deployment and ongoing support—and is expected to uphold Payarc’s engineering standards and secure, PCI DSS-compliant data-handling practices. Essential Duties And Responsibilities Design, develop, and maintain software applications, APIs, and backend services with limited guidanceBuild and integrate secure APIs and services, including payment-related functionality, in compliance with PCI DSSWrite clean, maintainable, and well-documented codeParticipate in code reviews and pull requests—both giving and receiving constructive feedback—and follow engineering best practicesCollaborate with product managers, UI/UX designers, and other engineers to deliver features that meet user and business needsDebug, test, and resolve technical issues of moderate complexity, including production defects surfaced through monitoring toolsContribute to system architecture and design discussionsOptimize application performance, scalability, and reliabilityEnsure security, privacy, and data-protection standards are followed, including secure handling of sensitive and cardholder dataEvaluate and adopt new technologies and tools that improve development efficiencyMentor and support Software Engineer I team members as neededParticipate in Agile/Scrum ceremonies using JIRA and Confluence (as applicable) Technology Environment Payarc engineers work across a broad, modern technology stack. Depending on the team and project, you may work with: Backend: PHP (Laravel, Nova, Apiato) and services in languages such as Java, C#, Python, Go, and C++Frontend: JavaScript with React and Angular, plus jQuery; HTML5, CSS3, LESS/SASS; Material DesignMobile: native Android (Kotlin, Java) and iOS (Swift, Objective-C), with cross-platform work in React Native/Flutter; libraries such as Retrofit, OkHttp, and FirebaseData: relational databases (MySQL, Oracle, Firebird) and NoSQL data storesCloud & DevOps: Amazon Web Services (AWS), Git/GitHub, CI/CD pipelines, Docker, and KubernetesPayments & security: PCI DSS-compliant systems, encryption standards such as TDES and DUKPT, and integrations with POS systems, terminals (e.g., PAX, AMP), and Magtek card readersAI & machine learning: applied ML and LLM-based workflows in Python (TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn), including vector databases and embeddingsCollaboration & tooling: Agile/Scrum delivery with JIRA and Confluence, and application monitoring with tools such as Crashlytics and New Relic Requirements QualificationsRequired 2–4 years of professional software development experienceProficiency in one or more of Payarc’s core languages and frameworks (e.g., PHP/Laravel, JavaScript with React or Angular, Java, C#, Python, or Kotlin)Experience building and consuming RESTful APIs and web servicesExperience with relational databases such as MySQL or OracleProficiency with Git/GitHub, including pull requests and code reviewsStrong problem-solving and analytical skills Preferred Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), with AWS preferredFamiliarity with CI/CD pipelinesExperience with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes)Knowledge of NoSQL databasesMobile development experience (Android with Kotlin, Retrofit/OkHttp, Firebase) or applied AI/ML exposureFamiliarity with PCI DSS and secure handling of cardholder dataExposure to encryption standards such as TDES and DUKPTExperience working in Agile environments with JIRA and Confluence Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Strong understanding of software design principlesAbility to write efficient, scalable, and maintainable codeAbility to work independently on features of moderate complexityStrong collaboration, communication, and interpersonal skillsAbility to manage multiple tasks and deadlinesSound judgment and resourcefulness in solving problemsCommitment to code quality, testing, and securityContinuous learning mindset Education Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field required (or equivalent practical experience).
