Job Title: Senior Java Engineer (Kafka/API)
Location: Waterloo, ON(hybrid)
Duration: 1 year to start (possibility for extension)
Rate: CAD60-CAD70/hr
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Senior Java Engineer to design, develop, and support enterprise-grade APIs, microservices, and event-driven applications.
The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, Kafka, Docker, and Kubernetes, along with experience building scalable, secure, and high-performance distributed systems.
This role requires collaboration with architects, developers, DevOps teams, and business stakeholders to deliver innovative solutions while following modern software engineering and cloud-native best practices.
What You Need to Do
Design, develop, and maintain Java-based REST APIs and microservices using Spring Boot and related technologies.Build and support event-driven applications and services leveraging Apache Kafka.Develop scalable and secure APIs following enterprise architecture and design standards.Create and maintain microservices deployed using Docker containers and Kubernetes platforms.Develop integrations with databases and backend systems, including relational and NoSQL databases.Participate in application design discussions, technical reviews, and architecture validations.Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve application defects and performance issues.Support and enhance existing applications and services built on legacy and modern technology stacks.Collaborate with cross-functional teams including architects, DevOps engineers, business analysts, and product owners.Contribute to CI/CD pipeline development and automation using modern DevOps tools and practices.Create and maintain technical documentation, API specifications, and operational procedures.Mentor junior developers and promote software development best practices across the team.Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend improvements to existing solutions and development processes.
What You'll Need to Succeed
5+ years of hands-on experience in Java application development and software engineering.Strong experience with Java, Spring Boot, RESTful APIs, and Microservices Architecture.Experience building and maintaining event-driven systems using Apache Kafka.Hands-on experience with Docker and Kubernetes in cloud or containerized environments.Strong understanding of API design standards, OpenAPI/Swagger specifications, and integration patterns.Experience with CI/CD tools and DevOps practices.Knowledge of source control, build, and deployment tools such as Git, Jenkins, Gradle, Maven, Bitbucket, or similar technologies.Experience with authentication and authorization frameworks such as OAuth2, JWT, or OpenID Connect.Working knowledge of relational and NoSQL databases such as PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or similar platforms.Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.Experience working in Agile and Scrum-based development environments.Excellent communication, presentation, and stakeholder management skills.Ability to mentor team members and contribute to technical leadership initiatives.
