Full-Stack Drupal Developer

Wellington · Sparks Interactive Sparks is an independent web studio building mission-critical sites for high-profile New Zealand public-sector and corporate clients. We're looking for a developer to join our Wellington team. You'll work across large-scale Drupal builds, migrations, and API integrations — including highly visible government sites that thousands of New Zealanders use every day. Our work: Modern Drupal 11 and Drupal CMS on a mature codebaseReact and other JavaScript frameworksTailwind and SDCPlus our own open-source Drupal distribution, Sector (sector.nz) currently building out for Recipes and Drupal CMS. There's real scope for open-source contribution and to shape the direction for the product, the team and your own professional practice. What we're after You're an engineer who owns problems end-to-end and has a track record of successful, completed web projects. You have strong PHP and Drupal experience — Symfony, Composer, Drush, Git, Twig are familiar ground — and you're comfortable across the front end with modern JavaScript frameworks, Tailwind, and component-based systems. Accessibility is a core requirement of our government work, not an afterthought, and we expect you to build to standard. AI development tools are part of how much of the team works, and we'd like you to be comfortable with them — used with engineering judgment, not just generating code and hoping. That said, we still value people who like to hand-build, and a considered case for either approach is welcome. We work in a cross-disciplinary team, so clear communication and good documentation matter as much as clean code. The role & budget We are a flat, independent studio and believe in being entirely upfront about commercial realities. Our project margins dictate a fixed budget for this position: Current Budget: $90,000–$110,000 base salary.Hours & Flexibility: Full-time or flexible part-time (32–40 hours per week). If you are a highly experienced operator where $110k full-time is below your market rate, we are very happy to discuss a pro-rata 4-day (32-hour) work week to match your value.Location: Based in our Wellington studio — minimum three days a week in the office, with one to two days from home.
