Senior Full Stack Developer

The Design System team at BNZ provides the front-end foundations behind our digital experiences. We create the standards, tooling and reusable components that help teams across the bank deliver consistent, accessible and quality experiences for millions of customers every year. Our mission is to turn BNZ's design language into products used by customers and colleagues every day. Working at the intersection of design and engineering, we build the shared platform that powers experiences across web, iOS and Android, helping teams move faster, raise quality and focus on solving customer problems. We also help shape frontend standards, build shared infrastructure, and make it easier for teams to create experiences that are accessible, reliable and consistent. This is an Auckland based hybrid role with three anchor days in the office and two days where you can work flexibly. What you'll bring to this role: Ideally, we are looking for someone who has come from a design background, understands accessibility and customer experience flows, and has moved into a developer role. As above, we know you may not tick every box, but we're looking for someone with some of the combination of some of the below experience: Commercial experience building modern web applications with TypeScript and React, with deep knowledge in HTML, CSS, JavaScript/TypeScript, modern Web APIs and frontend architecture.An understanding of web platform fundamentals and the ability to make sound technical decisions that balance performance, accessibility, maintainability and developer experience.Experience solving challenges at scale, such as frontend platform modernisation, component migrations, design system adoption or testing infrastructure improvements.The ability to write accessible, inclusive code and interpret and implement standards such as WCAG 2.2 AA.Experience improving frontend quality and reliability through testing, automation, CI/CD practices, observability and engineering standards.Experience building and maintaining automated testing suites (we use Playwright), with an understanding of component, visual regression, end-to-end and accessibility testing approaches.A systems-thinking approach, considering not only individual components but also the standards, tooling and practices that support a healthy frontend ecosystem.A passion for developer experience and creating tools, libraries and platforms that people enjoy using.Curiosity about emerging technologies, including AI-assisted development, LLMs and agentic workflows.Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with designers, developers and stakeholders from diverse backgrounds. What projects / work will the candidate be working on now and into the next year? Over the next year, you'll help evolve the foundations that power BNZ's digital experiences. This includes expanding our React component library, improving accessibility, modernising frontend tooling and architecture, strengthening the connection between design and code, and supporting teams as they adopt shared patterns and standards. You'll also help shape how emerging technologies, including AI-assisted development and MCPs, are used within our design system and frontend ecosystem. What will success look like for the candidate in this role? Within your first 12 months, you will: Evolve BNZ's web design system through reusable components, standards and tooling that are valued and adopted by teams across the bank.Improve frontend quality, consistency and developer experience across BNZ's digital ecosystem.Help deliver important technical initiatives, such as Figma AI integrations, platform modernisation and playwright testing improvements.Build trusted relationships with designers and engineers to create accessible, scalable solutions that meet real user needs.Contribute to frontend standards and engineering practices through mentoring, documentation and knowledge sharing.Explore emerging technologies, including AI-assisted development workflows, to improve the way teams build and consume design system capabilities.PLEASE NOTE: Advertising for this position closes Monday 17 August at 11pm.
