Description
Mid-Senior Backend Engineer (Python) | ClimateTech | £65-85K + Equity
Mostly remote, one day a week in London, plus a month a year working from abroad
Food is responsible for around a third of global greenhouse gas emissions.
Most businesses can't measure where those emissions come from, which makes reducing them almost impossible.
Techmunity is hiring a Backend Engineer for a ClimateTech startup solving that.
Their AI-powered platform helps food manufacturers, hospitality groups, wholesalers and retailers measure and reduce their carbon footprint in a fraction of the time traditional approaches take.
It supports 100+ organisations working towards net zero today.
The Backend Engineering role
You will take primary ownership of their platform backend.
You'll work alongside their Head of Software, a frontend engineer, and a data lead to build the systems that power their platform.
This is a high-ownership role in a small but mighty product team.
You'll have real influence over what they build and how they build it.
It's perfect for someone who wants broad scope and responsibility, and while they want someone who can confidently own the backend, they welcome people interested in working across the stack and leading projects from inception to delivery.
What They're Looking For
● Strong backend experience in Python, ideally with Django and/or FastAPI.
● Comfortable architecting systems that handle large tasks reliably and performantly, across API design, async processing, relational database design and querying, error handling, and monitoring.
● Confident designing and deploying cloud infrastructure with AWS.
● Happy taking features from idea to production, with a pragmatic, self-directed, and collaborative approach.
Nice to Have
● Experience building with AI/ML or integrating LLMs into production systems.
● Familiarity with data pipelines or working with sizeable datasets.
● Some frontend comfort (we value people who can reach across the stack).
● Interest in climate, sustainability, or food systems.
Why Join
● Real impact.
Every report you help ship gives a food business the data to meet ESG regulation, reduce emissions and engage customers on sustainability.
● Genuine ownership.
You'll own [most of] the backend and help set technical direction, not inherit someone else's roadmap.
● Ship fast, learn fast.
A small, AI-forward team building at the edge of what's possible in emissions data, with the latitude to try things and see results in weeks, not quarters.
● Central London office, with gym, food and drink on them, plus co-working spots across the city when you want a change of scene.
● Flexible by default.
Mostly remote, one day a week with the team in London, plus a month a year to work from abroad.
This Backend Engineer role is paying from £65,000 to £85,000 + equity.
